President Nasheed has committed his country to becoming completely carbon neutral by 2020, a target ...]]> SLOWLIFE Symposium was recently held on the luxury holidays island of the Maldives and was attended a mass of Hollywood A-listers, top business CEOs and a head of state, not to mention a plethora of senior environmental and holiday experts.

The event was held by the luxury holiday company Six Sense and drew the actors Daryl Hannah and Edward Norton, the infamous entrepreneur Sir Richard Branson and the green thinkers Jonathon Porritt and Tim Smit. They all met in the luxury holiday resort of Baa Atoll in the Maldives, joined by the President, President Nasheed.

President Nasheed has committed his country to becoming completely carbon neutral by 2020, a target that many western (and indeed Eastern – when one thinks of China) leaders would simply die for. President Nasheed told delegates that “interest in new technology is a blessing for the Maldives. We won’t save the world by becoming carbon neutral – we emit nothing compared with other countries – but if we can demonstrate a low carbon development strategy that can be copied elsewhere, it will be a step in the right direction.”

Luxury holidays are notoriously carbon emitters and the aviation industry alone counts for more than 5% of greenhouse gas emissions which are responsible for causing global warming. That 5% is more than the entire continent of Africa so it is obvious to see the role that the luxury beach holidays industry can take. And since leaving the Maldives, Richard Branson has announced a new target for making several Virgin Atlantic routes carbon neutral by the use of new fuels.

Richard Branson said that the winning of the climate battle was, simply put, the “biggest entrepreneurial opportunity” and many others emphasised that the growth of the “green” economy was an opportunity for growth. President Nasheed was keen that his country, well renowned for its tourism industry and notorious as a luxury holiday destination, could become a laboratory for green and carbon clean technologies.

The host of the meeting, Sonu Shivdasani (CEO of Six Sense) put it most succinctly “The SLOW LIFE Symposium brought together some incredible minds in the field of sustainable tourism and business. I fully expect some wonderful initiatives to come out of the work done last week.”
